Collecting and Restoring Lanterns

A big part of the project both for this module and in the future is collecting old second hand street lanterns, many of which have in recent years been replaced with LED lanterns.

This is necessary as I feel that with the ability to reconstruct accurate imagery of past historical features including our street furniture, simply jolting it from memory either by one self or a third party isn't always enough, the importance of direct observational drawing can never be enough, but then of course it is unfortunate that time is against us before it becomes harder and harder to find the now rare old sodium and 'original' preserved gas Victorian street lamps that still exist on our street.

As well as the art and the film samples that I hope to re-create as part of this movie about the importance of character as well as challenging the lack of celebration and confidence one has in being themselves, being different and standing out in a positive light. Distinction to me is a big part of art, whereby even where there may be some similarities in the basic elements of an artistic object including it's shape, size and colour, there is always something distinct about each one, this is something I always pick on with things like every tree, every obstacle and even every street light that I've come across in my life time. But with the increase of the digital era, the artificial world, I feel this celebration of distinction is slowly declining before our eyes.

My aim is to show a visual of just how beautiful and how important individualism is not only to 'look beautiful' but to give confidence, character and connection to one another and to show it is what makes us either as human, as animal or as an inanimate object.
